Nutrition for Diabetes

NOTE: DO NOT JUST STOP TAKING INSULIN OR ORAL DIABETIC MEDICINE, AS THIS CAN BE DEADLY.  YOU NEED TO INFORM YOUR HEALTH CARE PROVIDER AS TO WHAT YOU'RE DOING HERE SO HE/SHE CAN PROPERLY ADJUST YOUR INSULIN OR MEDICATION AS YOUR CONDITION IMPROVES.

 

Nutrition

 

Dietary Principles:

 

Juvenile Onset:

 

*  Avoid dairy products; cow's milk proteins may be an inciting antigen that will trigger auto-antibodies to pancreatic cells.

         

Juvenile-Onset, Insulin-dependent:

 

*  This diet should be carefully calculated according to the type and amount of insulin used.  Children need enough energy for growth, so they'll require adequate calories from complex carbohydrates.  All other information concerning adult-onset is applicable.  NOTE: IN CASES OF INSULIN-DEPENDENT JUVENILES, YOU MUST CONSULT A PHYSICIAN REGULARLY.

 

Adult Onset:

 

*  Follow a low sugar, low sodium, low cholesterol, low (in unsaturated) fat diet.

 

*  Recommended calorie percentages: 70% complex carbohydrates, l2%-15%          protein, 15-18% fat

 

*  Maintain a high fiber diet with lots of grains and vegetables.

 

*  AVOID OVEREATING!  If you're overweight, get back down into the normal range.  Avoid mental and nervous stress, eat in a pleasant environment and chew all food well.  Replace larger meals with 5-6 small meals throughout the day.  NOTE: TO MAKE LOSING WEIGHT PLEASANT AND LESS OF A CHORE, YOU MIGHT CONSIDER A VEGETARIAN OR MODIFIED VEGETARIAN DIET.

 

*  Elimination/rotation diet, rotation diet, rotation diet expanded

 

Therapeutic Foods and Spices:

 

Eat plenty of vegetables and grains like turnip greens, cucumbers, stringbeans, Jerusalem artichokes, burdock, parsley, flaxseed, pectin, guar gum, oat bran, mucilage, wheat germ, buckwheat, legumes, pumpkins, whole rice, yams, mung beans, squash, celery, millet, onions, spinach, peas, tofu, cabbage, daikon radishes, mushrooms, alfalfa sprouts, parsley, kelp, dulse, and Swiss chard.   

 

Also good are fruit and protein sources such as egg yolks, cod roe, lecithin, sesame seed butter, seeds and nuts, raw goat's milk, liquid chlorophyll, rice polishings, apple, cherries, peaches, blueberries, mulberries, soy, yogurt, Brewer's yeast, salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, walnuts, flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, black currant oil, cinnamon, turmeric, bay leaf, garlic, ginger, and cloves.

 

Recommended Fresh Juices: (Try each one until you find a juice that benefits you.)

 

Stringbean, cucumber, and celery

Raw sauerkraut and lemon

Raw sauerkraut and tomato

Parsley tea

Huckleberry leaf tea

Stringbean, brussel sprout, carrot, and lettuce

Watermelon and tomato

Bamboo shoots and celery (Drink it warm.)

Celery

 

Specific Foods in Combination:

 

Celery, yams and pumpkins

Pumpkins, yams, and potato pie

Cooked snow peas, blended into juice - 1/2 cup 2 x day

Tea from spinach and chicken gizzards - 1 cup 3 x  day

Soup made from cabbage, yams, winter melon, and lentils

Steamed tofu (cooled) with sesame oil and slices of raw squash

Soup made from mung beans, peas, and barley

Steamed millet with yams and a few dates

Daikon radishes, celery, carrot, and spinach juice

Juice from a fresh coconut - 2 x day

 

 

Foods to Avoid:

 

Avoid anything that you suspect may cause a food intolerance, sugars (all types, including malt, maltose, dextrose, and corn syrup), candy, honey, molasses, dried fruits, concentrated sweets, concentrated juices, fried,  spicy, fatty, and processed foods, margarine, vegetable shortenings, imitation butter spreads, most commercial peanut butters, ghee, barbecued meats, caffeine, and iron.

 

Specific Supplements:

 

Biotin - 16 mg. a day

 

Myo-inositol - l gram a day

 

Vitamin B3 + Vitamin B6 - 100 mg. a day (especially for neuropathy, and      also for gestational diabetes)

 

Thiamine - 100 mg. a day (2 week trial)

 

Vitamin B12 - sublingual tabs as directed

 

Vitamin C - 2 grams a day

 

Vitamin E - Begin with 100 I.U. and increase slowly to 400 I.U., adjusting     insulin dose as needed.)

 

Chromium - 200 mcg. a day

 

Magnesium - 500 mg. a day

 

Manganese - as directed on bottle

 

Phosphorus - as directed on bottle

 

Potassium - use sea salt to flavor food

 

Zinc picolinate - 30 mg. a day

 

Bioflavonoids: Rutin and quercetin, 500 mg. 1 x day

 

Coenzyme Q10 - 25 mg. a day

 

Omega-3 fatty acids - Take as directed.

 

Omega-6 fatty acids - Take as directed.

 

Calcium - 1 gram a day
