Nutrition for Hypertension

Dietary Principles:

 

*  Maintain a low sugar diet; no candy, cake, or sodas.

 

*  Maintain a low fat diet.

 

*  Calorie percentages: 40% complex carbohydrates, 40%    protein, 30% fat

 

*  Maintain a high fiber diet, even if it means taking a commercial fiber supplement.

 

*  Maintain a diet low in cholesterol. Count those grams of   fat!

 

*  Maintain a low sodium/sodium-restricted diet: You may use sea salt as a substitute.

 

*  Eat primarily a vegetarian diet.

 

*  If you are overweight, reduce weight to a normal range; if you have extreme hypertension, restrict your diet to 500      mg. of sodium per day.

 

*  Elimination/rotation diet, rotation diet

 

Therapeutic Foods:

 

Millet, buckwheat, oats, rice, raw goat's milk, raw leafy vegetables, watermelon, garlic, onions, foods rich in rutin, cornsilk tea, broccoli, celery, cherries, nectarines, pineapples, kumquats, watermelons, squash, pomegranates, guavas, parsley, cucumbers, dandelion greens, cornsilk and white mushroom soup, vegetables, nuts, salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, walnuts, flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, and black currant oil

 

Fresh Juices, Soups, and Teas: (Try each one until you find a juice that benefits you.)

 

Carrot, parsley and celery

Lime and whey powder

Grape and carrot

Grapefruit

Carrot, spinach, beet, and parsley

Celery and apple

Watermelon

Cornsilk tea

1/2 cup fresh snow peas

Soybean sprout tea

Carrot, beet, and cucumber

Carrot and spinach

Warm celery

Mung bean soup

Chrysanthemum and spinach tea

Persimmon

Radish

Cucumber vine tea

Celery and onion

 

Foods and Beverages to Avoid:

 

Any food that produces an intolerance; salty foods: pickles, olives, chips, packaged snacks, meat, (especially ham, frankfurters, bacon, bologna, corned beef, lunch meats, frozen fish fillets, sardines, herring, caviar, anchovies, and shellfish), dairy products, spicy foods: salsa, white and black pepper, and mustard; canned tomato juice, V-8 juice, processed cheese, canned, dried or instant soups, frozen peas and beans, most processed and refined foods, MSG, mayonnaise, salad dressings, gravies, ketchup, food with sodium benzoate as a preservative, sodium proprionate in cheese and bread, baking powder, baking soda, soft drinks, smoked meats and fish, Jello, pretzels, potato chips, salted nuts, candy, rennet tablets, pudding mixes, beverage mixes, fried or fatty foods, pork, margarine, vegetable shortenings, imitation butter spreads, most commercial peanut butters, ghee, barbecued meats, coffee, teas and colas containing caffeine, and alcohol; also avoid grapefruit juice if you're taking Procardia or Adalat.

 

Specific Supplements:

 

Vitamin A - 25,000 I.U. a day

 

Vitamin B-complex - 75 mg. a day

 

Vitamin B3 - Niacinamide - 100 mg. a day

 

Vitamin C - 3 grams a day

 

Vitamin D - 1,000 mg. per day

 

Calcium 1-2 grams a day; avoid Calcium supplementation if taking Verapamil for hypotensive effect.

 

Magnesium - 500 mg. a day  (Supplement several hundred mg. per day if you are taking Thiazide medication or digitalis to prevent weakening of cardiac muscle caused by the increased excretion of magnesium.)

 

Potassium - 100 mg. a day  (Have your potassium level monitored frequently by your physician.  Potassium supplements such as Slow-K or Micro-K are generally used to compensate for depletion in patients on Thiazide medication.)

 

Coenzyme Q10 - 60 mg. a day

 

Omega-3 fatty acids - 10 to 15 grams a day

 

Omega-6 fatty acids - Take as directed.
