Nutrition for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Dietary Principles:

 

*  Maintain a diet low in sugar

 

*  Maintain a diet low in fats; use only unsaturated fats

 

*  Calorie percentages: 70% complex carbohydrates, 12% to 15% protein, 15% to 18% fat

 

*  Short fasts (1 to 2 days) are recommended, with 2 week     intervals between them.

 

*  Go on a vegetarian cleansing diet, eating only rice and    vegetables for a three week trial; then evaluate your condition.

 

*  Elimination/rotation diet

 

Therapeutic Foods:

 

Salmon, herring, mackerel, sardines, flaxseed oil, evening primrose oil, black currant oil, sesame seeds, kale, artichokes, green beans, millet, celery, barley, okra, walnuts, almonds, collard greens, mustard greens, turnip greens, raw goat's milk, goat whey, black mission figs, gelatin (make a gelatin mold with cherry concentrate--no sugar), burdock root, cherries, pineapple, quince, watercress, blackberries, black currants,  limes, lettuce, olive oil, scallions, grapes, grapevine tea, black beans, most grains, leafy vegetables, mung beans, red beans, sweet rice wine with meals, cornsilk tea, diuretic foods and herbs, dandelion, cabbage, winter melon, and soybean sprouts

 

Fresh Juices: (Try each one until you find a juice that benefits you.)

 

Celery and parsley juice or tea

Cucumber, endive, and goat's whey

Celery and apple

Grapefruit

Celery

Carrot and celery

Goat's milk or whey and black mission figs

 

 

 

Foods, Beverages and Behaviors to Avoid:

 

Foods high in protein, meats, shellfish, animal products, cow's milk and other dairy products (due to promotion of PGE2 pro-inflammatory mediators), spinach, green onions, asparagus, rhubarb, vegetables from the nightshade family: tomatoes, green peppers, potatoes, pimentos, eggplant; spicy, cold, raw, fried or refined foods, sugar and sweets, coffee, teas and colas containing caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and stress.

 

Specific Supplements:

 

Vitamin B5 - 500 mg. 4 x day

 

Vitamin C - 3 to 4 grams a day

 

Vitamin K - 5 to 10 mg. 3 x day

 

Copper - 5 mg. 3 x day

 

Manganese - Take as directed.

 

Selenium - 200 mcg. a day

 

Zinc - 20 to 50 mg. 3 x day

 

Bromelain - 250 mg. 2 x day between meals

 

Lecithin - Take as directed.

 

L-histidine - Take as directed.

 

Omega-3 fatty acids - Take as directed.

 

Omega-6 fatty acids - Take as directed.

 

D, L phenylalanine - Take as directed.

 

Vitamin E - 1,000 I.U. a day; (Start with 200 I.U. and increase to 1,000 I.U. over a 4 week period.)

 

Glycosamines - Take as directed.
